The Group Welcomes Controversy.
Socrates Café groups meet at coffee shops across the map to discuss issues relevant in today’s society. Did you know that ancient Greeks found it offensive if someone held back from discussing controversial issues, such as religion and politics in public? To them it implied you did not believe they were intelligent enough to handle controversy. According to John Jackson, who founded the Shreveport group, the Socrates Café discussion group offers everyone a “feast of knowledge;” they welcome all perspectives, and group members enjoy discussing controversial issues in a respectful manner.
Expect the Unexpected.
I wandered into the group expecting to hear people discussing philosophy; however, I found a local comedian leading a discussion about Robin Williams’ death and the link between comedians and depression. Group members informed me that topics vary widely as any member is free to suggest and lead a group discussion. Past topics have ranged from hard-hitting issues such as rape and gender inequality to entertaining lessons on professional special effects make-up.
Geek is Chic.
A visit to the group made me reminiscent of some of my favorite college courses; the ones with good chemistry and professors who promoted higher-level discussions. It made me miss the days when I could grab a latte and enjoy a college-level debate. If you are looking for a platform for educated discussions – the Socrates Café certainly fits the bill.
Dig the Welcome Vibe.
I found everyone to be very welcoming. There were approximately 8 members in attendance this past week. The discussion was lively and each member had a lot to contribute, after all, they were discussing Robin Williams – so many of us have thoughts and feelings we are processing about his tragic end. Even still, everyone seemed to make time for others to take the floor and several members encouraged quieter people, such as myself to speak up if we made a simple nod or hand signal indicating we had something to say.
Props to the Local Library System.
Socrates Café is sponsored by the Shreve Memorial Library and takes place at the Hamilton/South Caddo Library Branch every second and last Wednesday of the month from 5 – 7 p.m. during the summer, and from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. after Labor Day weekend.
