The SBC Comedy Guild has been around for a while now, but recently they’ve been picking up steam. A solid foundation of comedic veterans and an invigorating batch of fresh faces have seen the local comedy troupe gaining traction, and it’s beginning to show.
Since the beginning of this month, the Guild has begun an impressive weekly rotation of four open mics around the area. Those familiar with local comedy may recognize the longstanding Monday and Tuesday night spots, but the Guild’s new and improved schedule is as follows:
Sunday: Bayou Thunder Saloon at 7:00 p.m.
Monday: The Brass Monkey at 9:00 p.m.
Tuesday: Hangar 21 at 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday: Back 2 Back Bar at 9:00 p.m.
Open mics are always free admission, and the bars each have their own drink specials during the week, so you don’t have to break the bank to split your sides. Moreover, open mics are just that – open. Anybody can test their comedic chops by simply introducing themselves to the night’s emcee and adding their name to the list. You can go up on stage for a humble 30 seconds or the full 10 minutes if you like! But you’ll never know if you’ve got a knack for laughs if you don’t go up.
Any comedy group knows that open mics are your scene’s bread and butter, but the SBC Comedy Guild is adding some gravy to the mix. On Wednesday, October 28th, the usual open mic at Back 2 Back will be replaced with a special Weird Wednesday show, headlined by veteran, world-traveled Shreveport native Lee Marvin Adams. Cover is $5 for that show, which will also feature some of the Guild’s best and brightest. If you go to one comedy show this month, this should be the one.
October is shaping up to be quite a month for the SBC Comedy Guild, and they show no signs of stopping. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for notable shows and developments in the future of our towns’ comedy scene; in the meantime, go to some open mics, check out the shows, and show our local comedians some support!
