agnesplaybillThe River City Repertory Theater, Shreveport-Bossier’s only professional theater company, has opened the Tony-winning production Agnes of God at the East Bank Theater in Bossier City. It will run through Sunday. The original Broadway production opened in 1982 and starred Elizabeth Ashley, Geraldine Page, and Amanda Plummer. The film version, which was nominated for two Oscars, featured Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft, and Meg Tilly.

The story follows that of Dr. Martha Livingstone, a forensic psychiatrist, who has been court appointed to determine whether Sister Agnes, a novice nun, is legally sane to stand trial for the manslaughter of her infant. Dr. Livingstone comes up against Mother Superior who is fiercely protective of Agnes and whom she suspects is hiding something.

The River City Rep cast includes local Cara Johnston, who stars as a vibrant Agnes. Johnston has been previously featured in RCRT’s productions of Bus Stop and Boeing Boeing.

Also joining the cast is Charity Schubert, who returns home from NYC to appear as Martha Livingstone, the court psychiatrist. Schubert was the acclaimed lead in Venus in Fur and has been seen in River City’s Stepping Out, Doubt and The Member of the Wedding.
