The whole mad world groaning
State Fair beyond the stadium
Friday night drum corps ricochets
across the bayou.
Cars hum and thrum
the interstate seethes
a great wasp nest tipped over.
Police sirens wail in coyote unison
race reckless through damp streets
the can man tips over in a clatter of violence.
But listen
much deeper in the darkness
barely audible
rumble of the reeds
great river barge
low humming throat singer
inner city zensation
an ambulance roars by in a wind of mechanic muscle
shaking the ground and the glass of water on my end table.
