One of the benefits of Hedonism
That goes unremarked by square and scold
Is that it tends toward remaking
Casts new metal in new mold
And takes the hammer to the old
Or like the Romans’ Lupercal
Wine flowing in red wave
Casting down their laurel crowns
The streets with rich robes to pave
Hailing as king the humble slave
In elder days the Carnival
Meant disorder, ruin and dismay
For the world turned right-side-up
And the poor would get their way
If only for a day
Our modern way seems weak to me
“Rebel in accordance with the law!”
Better flip the scales and sow disorder
Serve the lords some shock and awe
Make every day a Mardi Gras
