The Lackadaisies released their first full-length album, Act Your Age, at the Nov. 1 Free Fridays Forever event in the Red River District. With the album being exclusively on vinyl and download cards, fans were eager to get their hands on a copy.
This was the first time you could pick up the band’s music on vinyl. As one of the few local albums that has been pressed on vinyl, Act Your Age was the second vinyl to come out of Pizza Party Studios. Michael Stephens, a former member of the band, ran the studio and had recorded several local bands over the last two years in his Shreveport studio before relocating to Philadelphia.
Act Your Age showcases the bands amazing talent through 10 strong tracks. Band members include Jeremy Gibson on drums and vocals; Mus Gillum on bass and vocals; Logan Hall on guitar and keys; Josh Hollis on vocals and guitar and Michael Stephens on guitar, keys and percussion. The album was mostly recorded in a little over a week at Glen Grefe’s local studio.
“Most of the record was done in that space,” said Stephens. “It captured that moment in time. Eighty percent was recorded at Glen’s place, and two songs were done at The Boot.”
The last song on the record, “Up From Below,” was recorded in the attic of The Boot, which doubled as a recording studio for a brief period of time. The other song recorded in the attic, “Starshine,” can be found as a bonus track on the download card.
Local musicians Ryan Viser and Stefan Poole also recorded at The Boot, laying down horns for “Looking for a Friend,” “Please Just Once” and “Up From Below.”
The album has a laid back vibe with very strong gang vocals and sounds particularly good on vinyl.
“After hearing the test pressing, I didn’t want to change anything,” said Stephens. “I’m convinced it’s the only way to listen to it.”
On the record, the low end sounds warm and boomy, and individual instruments have more room to breathe. The horns sound absolutely amazing, and it gives the record classic touches of soul and R&B. The whole album sounds like 60s rock and roll with soul peppered throughout. The actual record feels heavy and made of good quality vinyl.
If you have an extra $20, you should definitely pick up a copy at the band’s next show.
