With the Louisiana Music Prize right around the corner, we’ve decided to reach out to some of the participating bands in hopes of getting to know them a little better. Our very own Landon Miller got in touch with New Orleans natives The Breton Sound to do just that. We present the interview below for your reading pleasure.

Heliopolis: Congrats again on being selected for the Louisiana Music Prize!

The Breton Sound: Hey man! Thanks for sending over. We’re really excited to be a part of the LA Music Prize and finally get up to Shreveport.

Helio: Seems like you’re doing great already. What are a few notable things the band has done recently? Bragging rights stuff. Any festivals? Recording sessions? Big shows?

TBS: We’ve done a lot lately. We put out our new record, “Don’t Be Afraid of Rock & Roll, Vol 1” in May and it’s gotten great reviews and response. We’ll be starting volume 2 early next year, and put the two together as a full length LP on vinyl. We were nominated for Best Emerging Act in New Orleans by Gambit Magazine’s “Big Easy Awards.”  We just filmed a performance for an upcoming TV show called New Orleans Live, showcasing Louisiana musicians that should air regionally in October, and nationally next year. We’re playing some cool stuff through the end of the year also, outside the Superdome Oct 15th before the Saints/Falcons game, and a big New Years Eve event in NOLA at the Hyatt called Big Night New Orleans. Getting picked as a finalist for the LA Music Prize is a pretty rad way to cap the year off.

Helio: Do you tour regularly? If so, what are some of your favorite cities or regions and why?

TBS: We tour as much as we can, we all work, but our jobs are flexible and we go as much as we can.

As far as favorite places, Austin is amazing, we love Memphis (did part of our record there). We love going places where there’s culture and good food, fun things to see. It’s a lot more fun than just hopping in the van and driving to the next place. We like to kinda experience places we go to when we can.

Helio: Has the band ever passed through or played Shreveport before? Anywhere close?

TBS: We haven’t played Shreveport yet, not for any real reason or anything, it just hasn’t happened. We’ve been wanting to though. We’ve all played there in past bands (me with Cowboy Mouth, Joe with MyNameIsJohnMichael, and John with Fatter Than Albert). So it’s been a while coming, but we’re glad to finally get up there, and it’s a really great opportunity to get a foot in the door with the La Music Prize.

Helio: If you could, what are a few bands you’d love to open for on a tour?

TBS: In a perfect world, I’d love to share a stage with Foo Fighters or Weezer. Royal Blood would be killer, they look amazing live.

Helio: What are your favorite TV shows currently?  For us, it’s “True Detective” and “Game of Thrones.”

TBS: John’s been hardcore on Narcos. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve been bingeing on Gilmore Girls, and I’ve got like 6 episodes left, I don’t know what I’ll do with my life when I’m done. Maybe write more songs, that’d be good. Stephen just watches nothing but football coverage this time of year, and NCIS. Joe’s been watching Agents of Shield, he loves the comic stuff.

Helio: Any other cool facts about the band? Is anyone related? Cool stories of how you met, etc.?

TBS: John and Joe are twin brothers. Stephen and I used to play in a Weezer cover band called tWeezer. We kept the ‘t’ small to try and trick people, and it worked a lot. Also, Stephen once caught a 23 ft. marlin using only a Nintendo Power Glove. We stuffed it, and it hangs in our rehearsal space.

Thanks again to The Breton Sound for getting back to us! Check them out on Facebook, Twitter, and their YouTube channel. Tune in Thursday for our next LA Music Prize Spotlight!
