Contentious issues have met today with the vandalization of the Confederate monument at the Caddo Parish Courthouse. In the wake of the deaths of civilians and police officers in tragic scenarios across the country, many are searching for an outlet. A vigil was planned for tonight at the courthouse is being rescheduled after the events in Dallas. A post on social media prompted a brief scare of an organized riot downtown.

But there is hope for true dialogue around these issues. Some are planning meetup events throughout the weekend and we hope people will take advantage of them to talk, share ideas, and organize change instead of lashing out.

One event will take place at Bon Temps Coffee Bar Sunday, July 10th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.. The purpose is to talk with others looking for real answers and to discuss solutions. Bon Temps has hosted these kinds of events in previous times of turmoil. Bon Temps will also be holding its regular Poets in the District on Saturday.

Another that was suggested is the weekly H&H Lounge drum circle meetup. The next one will take place this coming Tuesday, July 12th between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m..

We will be on the lookout for more peaceful events focused on real change and let you know when they come up.

Note: A previous version of this article said the vigil at the courthouse was cancelled, but we are now learning that organizers are aiming to reschedule rather than cancel outright.
