Let’s talk about Daniel Smalley and the Nine. There is a strong chance you’ve seen them play if you’ve been anywhere near the music scene these past few years. The band has been frequenting spots like Strange Brew and Bear’s on Fairfield in Highland for awhile. Perhaps you’ve seen them over the river at Daq’s Wings or The Stage at Silver Star.
They play a lost kind of country. Old stuff, but not too ancient. Clever, heartfelt lyricism and musicianship from a day gone by. Not that outlaw bro-twang stuff you hear on the radio. It’s got more class, more honesty.
Smalley is an authentic man of the South. A self made singer with a dedicated wife and kids, and one hell of a story. In a world where most music is coming from pedals and robots, he’s still strumming it out. Writing his own words and melodies. Singing night after night, perfecting his showmanship and performance pacing. His voice has the familiar timbre of old-country greats: the right amount of twang with a smooth finish. His lyrics speak of family life, personal struggles, irony, and humor. The songs are well written and backed by one of the best bands you’ll hear in the Ark-La-Tex.
So why haven’t these guy blown up? Why haven’t you heard of them?
One thing is for certain: they haven’t been properly recorded. Over the years, Smalley has recorded and released a few albums showcasing his songs, but nothing that properly captures the energy of the live show.
Recently, the group launched a Kickstarter campaign to solve this problem. They are aspiring to cut a record with local knob turner Chris Bell of Echophone Recording Studios. A magical union of professional recording quality and a killer band. With a little help from fans, they may finally capture the beast of creativity. Find out more about this work in progress by checking out the Kickstarter page.
Not impressed yet? Catch them at a show! They are playing The Brass Monkey this month on the 27th. Or take a minute to watch one of the songs posted on his YouTube channel. Get involved! Be entertained!
