Sponsored by the Highland Restoration Association, the inaugural Highland Handmade takes place 10am – 4pm Saturday, May 9, in the parking lot of Robinson’s Rescue, 2515 Line Ave., in Shreveport. The market will offer art, goods, vintage, and more just in time for Mother’s Day.

“This is going to be a lot of fun,” said Derick Jones, owner of Olive Street Thrift & Vintage and co-creator of Highland Handmade. “Almost all of these businesses and individuals coming out are either from or work in Highland [neighborhood]. We wanted this event to really show off the talents of people who are part of this neighborhood.”

Jones is working with Kate Hesson of Zombee Candle and April Dahm, former director of the Texas Avenue Community Association and creator of the Texas Avenue Makers Fair.

“Events like Highland Handmade help promote the neighborhood,” said Dahm. “I hope to see more events like this popping up all over Shreveport. Highland is full of creative types and Highland Handmade helps support their work.”

Small businesses and independent artists who live and/or work in the Highland neighborhood, including Olive Street Thrift & Vintage, Zombee Candle, A Mighty Fine Beast, Sacred Strawberry, Fleur De Creme, Day Old Blues Records, and independent artists will be featured at the market. Attendees can also expect to find food vendors and see performances by the Gems of Cairo.

Nonprofits of the historic neighborhood, including The Philadelphia Center, Renzi Education & Art Center, Shreveport Bossier Animal Rescue, will also be represented. A raffle will be held with prizes from local vendors to raise funds for Robinson’s Rescue.

Plus, Bike Shreveport will be on-site to provide free valet and tune-ups.
