An award-winning event for Shreveport-Bossier returns to downtown Shreveport’s Festival Plaza on Saturday.
The 17th annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta will take place 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., featuring the annual Chihuahua Challenge, live music, food vendors, traditional dance performances and a custom car show. Admission to the fiesta is free until 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., admission is $5.
“We’re hoping that this will be the best-attended festival in Cinco de Mayo Fiesta history,” said Guillermo “Willie” Ortiz, event chairperson. “We’re looking to fill Festival Plaza with activity after activity.”
The event, which is a project of the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), raises funds for academic scholarships benefiting Hispanic students throughout the Ark-La-Tex region.
Traditional Mexican folk dancers, Alegre Ballet Folklórico, of Dallas-Ft. Worth area will take the stage at 1:30 p.m.
Traditional dances will take center stage in another program following Alegre Ballet Folklórico, which will present Aztec dancers in their ornately feathered costumes.
San Antonio’s Colao – a salsa and merengue group – will perform a high-energy blend of salsa, bachata, and merengue music at 4 p.m.
