‘Twas the night before Christmas; Shreveport was quiet
Walmart was closed, ending the Black Friday riot
Streets were empty from downtown to South Broadmoor
And Highland cats were cozy underneath our floor
The holiday lights were bright throughout this small town,
Our neighbors finally turned their country music down.
Dreaming of a “White Christmas,” the ice was gone,
I slept that night with the window unit back on.
All of a sudden a loud Bang! And then Boom!
I raced to the window at the back of the room,
Expecting a raccoon or maybe a possum,
Squinting a little harder…that’s when I saw him.
It wasn’t the guy always asking for my change,
But some older dude, a little chubby and strange
An impressive white beard, a Southern Fried, no doubt
I was listening closely, he then began to shout:
“These black boots, I swear! Shoelaces in my bike chain!”
“Every year this big red costume is such a pain!”
Adorned with silver bells and colored red and green,
His ride was unlike any other I’d seen.
He rode off in a hurry, pit bull by his side
That’s when I heard a stumble coming from inside
I tip-toed up to the front, my dogs still asleep,
And there was that old lush, somewhat light on his feet
A new wind chime for mom, and a chainsaw for dad
Then something for me: a new Michael Kors handbag!
Bones for the dogs, and a scratching post for the cat
He didn’t skip a beat, I was sure about that.
And then he made his way to the egg nog and rum
He chuckled and said, “Reward for a job well done!”
Grabbing his cell, a call to cab driver Rudy
It was late, and he was starting to get moody.
Walking out the front door, his spirits were still high
He rolled down the window to yell his goodbye
Driving away with their hip-hop music blaring,
I was stunned; I couldn’t move. I just sat staring.
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
Holiday success! I think this year went alright!”
