One of the biggest misconceptions about Shreveport-Bossier is that there is nothing to do; most people know at least one person who says as much.

Most are under the impression that their Friday and Saturday nights are damned to the classic dinner and a movie or staying at home for the third weekend in a row to participate in another Guitar Hero marathon. Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center is one of many reasons why this simply isn’t true.

Later this month, Sci-Port’s “Science on the Rocks” series will be hosting a party for those 21+ who have some of their inner child whispering in their ear. “Sci-Port After Dark” will take place Saturday, Nov. 30, 7 – 11 p.m.

The idea is simple – enjoy libations while experiencing the Center’s 290+ hands-on exhibits, including its latest traveling exhibition, LEGO® Castle Adventure. All for $8 per person 21 years and older.

Alan Brown, senior programs manager, said that this was the first time the Center has done something so free-form for the adults.

“This is just a chance for adults to come and play in Sci-Port,” said Brown. “This is the first time we’re doing something like this. I can see us doing [it] relatively regularly.”

Remember playing as a kid on Saturday mornings without a care in the world? Sci-Port is inviting you over to play with their LEGO® Castle Adventure exhibit, and they promise to have more than your best childhood friend down the street could have ever delivered.

Think about it: instead of using your imagination to build something amazing while on a massive sugar rush due to the entire box of Count Chocula you consumed, you will lose your inhibitions, and thus allow your imagination to run wild while building and exploring. Food trucks will be there to satisfy your hunger, and the staff at Sci-Port even suggested the possibility of a dance party under the Sawyer Space Dome Planetarium stars.

Not to mention you’re taller than you were when you were eight; no need to employ a step ladder for those ambitious projects.

“I plan on being there, which means at some point during the night I’ll blow something up,” said Brown, with a brief mischievous smile adding levity to his words. “In a responsible and controlled manner.”

Of course.

Sci-Port is well-known to students of northwest Louisiana, providing them with a space where they can learn the basics of our universe in an entertaining and interactive manner. Most of their programs are geared to the younger crowds, and most adults who visit have difficulty doing anything other than watching after their kids.

Things have been changing at the Center, however, with the addition of more adult-oriented programs, including “Science on the Rocks.” The staff at Sci-Port hopes that the Sci-Port After Dark madness on Nov. 30 will whet your appetite for more scientific fun on December 5 for the Science of Mixology.

The idea behind Science on the Rocks is to present everyday things we might take for granted and explain the scientific method behind them. Employing local experts from various fields like for example hypnotherapy and so on, Sci-Port has spent nearly a year providing food and drinks while exploring the sciences behind topics such as beer, astronomy, horror films, hypnosis and wine.

During the Science of Survival event in May, survival experts from Barksdale were invited to teach attendees how to endure the wilderness, demonstrating different methods of starting a fire.

Adam Venezia, a Shreveport-Bossier local who has been to several of these events, particularly enjoyed the Science of Wine.

“I wholeheartedly support anything that earns money and attention for Sci-Port,” said Venezia. “At every event I’ve attended, people have obviously been having a great time, and in the end I feel the program is really about having a tall glass of fun with a twist of science — and Science on the Rocks provides just that.”

So if an evening filled with drinks, good food, experiencing LEGO® Castle Adventure and dancing under a simulation of the night sky sounds like a good time to you, get your significant other or a group of friends, and make your way out to Sci-Port on Nov. 30 and do science with the rest of us.
